Description
Taxonomy: The American dagger nematode (Xiphinema americanum) belongs to the order Dorylaimida and the family Longidoridae. It is a microscopic, ectoparasitic nematode recognized primarily for its long, needle-like stylet used to pierce plant roots.
Host range: This pest has an exceptionally broad host range, attacking various fruit trees including apples, peaches, and cherries. It also causes significant economic losses in vineyards, berry crops, and many nursery-grown woody ornamental species.
Biology and life cycle: Xiphinema americanum completes its life cycle within the soil profile. The life cycle consists of the egg stage, four larval stages, and the adult phase. These nematodes thrive in diverse soil conditions, preferring moderate moisture and are most active in the rhizosphere where root exudates attract them.
Damage and economic impact: The primary direct damage is the destruction of root tips and the interruption of water and nutrient uptake. More importantly, this nematode is a major vector for several nepoviruses, such as the tobacco ringspot virus and tomato ringspot virus, which can render entire plantations unproductive.
Control measures: Due to their survival ability in deep soil layers, management requires an integrated approach:
- Utilizing nematode-free nursery stock to prevent field infestation.
- Implementing pre-plant soil fumigation in high-value perennial orchards.
- Incorporating crop rotation with non-host plants to reduce nematode population density.
