Systematic position: Xiphinema bakeri belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Enoplea, order Dorylaimida, and family Longidoridae. Commonly known as a type of dagger nematode, it is an obligate ectoparasite that resides in the soil and feeds on the root tips of host plants.

Host plants: This nematode is a significant concern for forest nurseries and ornamental plantations. It primarily attacks coniferous species, including firs (Abies), spruces (Picea), and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). Its wide host range allows it to survive on various plant species, making eradication in infested soil challenging.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Xiphinema bakeri comprises an egg stage and four juvenile stages, with molting occurring between each stage. Development is strictly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly soil temperature and moisture levels. As ectoparasites, they do not enter the root tissue fully but use their specialized feeding apparatus to extract nutrients from the cortical cells of roots.

Damage and harmfulness: Feeding activity causes mechanical and chemical damage to the root system. The injection of enzymes leads to root tip necrosis, swelling, and the formation of characteristic galls or hooked roots. This impaired root system is unable to effectively absorb water and nutrients, resulting in stunted aerial growth, needle chlorosis, and increased vulnerability to secondary root pathogens.

Control measures: Management of Xiphinema bakeri relies on an integrated approach. The most effective method is pre-planting soil fumigation using approved nematicides to reduce population density. Other strategies include the use of clean, pathogen-free nursery stock, implementing long-term crop rotation schemes, and practicing proper irrigation management to avoid creating conditions favorable for nematode reproduction and movement.
