Xiphinema brevicolle

Description

Xiphinema brevicolle is a species of plant-parasitic nematodes belonging to the family Longidoridae and the order Dorylaimida. These microscopic organisms are known as dagger nematodes, characterized by their long stylets which they use to pierce the root cells of host plants while living in the surrounding soil profile.

This pest has a broad host range, primarily affecting perennial crops such as grapevines, fruit trees, and various ornamental plants. It is particularly problematic in orchard and vineyard soils, where high populations can persist for many years if the host plants are not removed or the soil is not treated properly.

The biology of Xiphinema brevicolle involves a relatively slow life cycle with various juvenile stages that resemble the adults. They are ectoparasites, meaning they feed on the exterior of the root tips without entering the root tissue entirely. They remain mobile in the soil, moving towards nutrient-rich root zones to feed throughout their development.

The primary damage caused by these nematodes is the destruction of root tips and the induction of necrosis, which inhibits water and nutrient uptake. Beyond direct mechanical damage, they are major vectors for nepoviruses, which can cause severe stunting, leaf deformation, and reduced yield quality in economically significant crops like grapes.

  • Use of certified nematode-free nursery stock for new plantings.
  • Pre-plant soil fumigation to drastically reduce nematode populations.
  • Crop rotation with non-host species or antagonistic cover crops.
  • Strict weed management to prevent alternative feeding sources.
  • Application of biological control agents that target soil-borne nematodes.

Management of Xiphinema brevicolle relies heavily on prevention and pre-planting site preparation. Because these nematodes are difficult to eradicate once a field is established, soil sampling prior to planting is a critical agronomic step to determine the necessity of soil treatment.
