California dagger nematode

Systematic position: Xiphinema californicum is a member of the order Dorylaimida and the family Longidoridae. This microscopic soil-borne organism is classified as an ectoparasitic nematode. It is well-documented in agricultural science for its dual role as a direct root feeder and a primary vector for nepoviruses, which cause severe agricultural diseases.

Host range: The nematode has a broad host range, primarily targeting woody perennials. Crops such as grapevines, peaches, cherries, and various orchard trees are particularly susceptible. It is also frequently found in nurseries, where it can be spread through infested soil attached to the root systems of young nursery stock.

Biology and life cycle: These nematodes live in the soil, feeding on the roots of host plants. Their life cycle consists of an egg stage followed by four juvenile stages before reaching adulthood. They possess a long, hollow stylet which they use to pierce root cells and extract nutrients. Their mobility is limited, but they are highly efficient at finding susceptible root tips within the soil profile.

Damage and pathogenicity: Feeding by Xiphinema californicum causes mechanical injury to root tips, leading to stunted growth, root swelling, and necrosis. The most significant damage, however, is viral transmission. By feeding on virus-infected roots and subsequently moving to healthy ones, they transmit pathogens that lead to leaf deformation, poor fruit quality, and overall decline in plant vitality.

Management strategies: Control of dagger nematodes is challenging due to their depth in the soil and lack of effective curative treatments once an infection is established. Recommended practices include:

• Testing soil prior to planting to determine nematode populations and species.
• Using certified, nematode-free planting material to prevent field infestation.
• Fumigation of soil in high-value cropping systems to reduce initial nematode counts.
• Implementation of cover crops or fallow periods to starve out populations.
