Description

Xiphinema chambersi is a species of plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Dorylaimida and the family Longidoridae. Commonly known as a type of "dagger nematode," it is characterized by an elongated odontostyle used to feed on the root tips of various host plants. These microscopic organisms reside in the soil, primarily concentrating in the rhizosphere where root exudates attract them.

This nematode species is known to infest a variety of woody plants and several agricultural crops, including perennial fruits and ornamentals. By positioning themselves at the root tips, they utilize their needle-like mouthparts to penetrate cells and extract nutrients. Their ability to persist in the soil for extended periods, even in the absence of a preferred host, makes them a significant management challenge for commercial growers.

The life cycle of this nematode follows a typical pattern for the genus Xiphinema, consisting of an egg stage followed by four juvenile stages, with molting occurring between each stage. Reproduction is generally slow, often taking several months to complete one generation depending on soil temperature and moisture levels. Despite the slow reproduction rate, their cumulative impact over several growing seasons can lead to severe population densities.

Damage caused by Xiphinema chambersi is primarily manifested through root system impairment. Feeding leads to the formation of root galls, necrosis of root tips, and stunted root development. Above-ground symptoms include uneven growth, chlorosis, reduced vigor, and diminished yields.
