Description

Xiphinema coxi is a species of ectoparasitic nematode belonging to the order Dorylaimida and the family Longidoridae. These nematodes are widely recognized in agricultural practice due to their ability to feed on the roots of plants while acting as significant vectors for plant pathogenic viruses, causing substantial economic losses.

The host range of Xiphinema coxi is quite broad, affecting various fruit-bearing trees, berry bushes such as strawberries and raspberries, grapevines, and a variety of ornamental plants. These nematodes can survive in soil environments for extended periods, making them difficult to eradicate once a field is infested.

The biology of the nematode involves an egg stage, four larval stages, and an adult stage, all of which occur within the soil profile. Using their elongated odontostyle, they penetrate the root tissue to extract cell contents, causing significant physiological stress to the host plant and disrupting nutrient and water uptake.

Damage is characterized by root necrosis, stunted plant growth, and a reduction in crop yield. Beyond direct physical damage, the primary threat is the transmission of nepoviruses, such as strawberry latent ringspot virus. As the nematode feeds, it transmits these viral pathogens, leading to systemic infections that cannot be managed with standard pesticides.
