Description
The needle nematode (Xiphinema diversicaudatum) is a significant soil-borne plant parasitic nematode belonging to the order Dorylaimida and the family Longidoridae. It is recognized as a major pest in agriculture, primarily due to its role as a vector for various nepoviruses that cause severe economic losses in diverse cropping systems.
This nematode has a wide host range, attacking commercial crops such as grapevines, strawberries, raspberries, and hops, as well as various ornamental trees and shrubs. By feeding on root tips, the nematode induces swelling and necrosis, which stunts the plant and significantly compromises its ability to thrive, especially when environmental conditions are unfavorable.
The life cycle consists of an egg stage and four juvenile stages, followed by the adult stage. The nematode feeds ectoparasitically, meaning it remains outside the root while inserting its stylet into the tissue. The population density of this pest is influenced by soil temperature, moisture levels, and the availability of preferred host roots, with a generation time that can extend over several months.
Damage is characterized by root system stunting, reduced water and nutrient uptake, and the development of symptoms resembling drought stress. Beyond direct damage, the transmission of viruses like the arabis mosaic virus and strawberry latent ringspot virus leads to chlorosis, leaf distortion, and plant decline. These virus-related symptoms often persist long after the initial nematode feeding has occurred.
Management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) to reduce nematode populations below the economic threshold. Key approaches include
