Xiphinema ifacolum is a significant soil-borne plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the Longidoridae family, order Dorylaimida. Known as a needle nematode, it is recognized for its long, specialized feeding stylet which it uses to penetrate the root tissues of host plants, causing severe physiological stress to the plant.

The host range of this nematode includes a variety of economically important tropical and subtropical plants, as well as several woody perennial species. It thrives in the rhizosphere, where it establishes stable populations that persist over time, making it a persistent challenge in agricultural environments where sensitive crops are cultivated.

The biological cycle of Xiphinema ifacolum is complex, involving several juvenile stages that are morphologically similar to adults. These nematodes are migratory endoparasites or ectoparasites that move through the soil profile in search of suitable feeding sites. Their metabolic rate and reproduction are highly dependent on soil moisture levels and temperature, which dictate their activity patterns during the growing season.
