Dagger nematode

Taxonomic position: The Xiphinema index, commonly known as a dagger nematode, belongs to the phylum Nematoda, order Dorylaimida, and family Longidoridae. It is a highly specialized ectoparasitic soil nematode that utilizes its long, needle-like stylet to feed on the root tips of perennial crops.

Host plants: The primary economic host of this nematode is the grapevine (Vitis vinifera). However, its host range is quite broad, including fig trees, citrus, and various weed species. The ability to persist on the roots of alternative hosts makes soil infestation long-lasting and difficult to eradicate.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Xiphinema index occurs entirely within the soil environment. It develops through several larval stages before reaching adulthood. The nematode feeds by piercing root cells and injecting saliva, which facilitates nutrient extraction. Their populations thrive in well-structured, moist soils, and their distribution is heavily influenced by soil texture and moisture content.

Damage and economic importance: Direct damage involves the destruction of root tips, which limits water and nutrient uptake, causing stunted growth and chlorosis. The most significant economic impact, however, is its role as the primary vector for the Grapevine Fanleaf Virus (GFLV). Once a vineyard is infested, the spread of the virus becomes nearly inevitable, leading to vineyard decline and significant yield losses.

Management and control: Managing this pest is challenging due to its presence deep in the soil profile. Recommended practices include:

• Planting certified virus-free rootstock and scion materials.
• Strict quarantine procedures to prevent movement of infested soil or plant parts.
• Soil fumigation before planting in known infested areas.
• Fallow periods combined with non-host cover crops to reduce nematode density.
• Regular soil analysis to detect and monitor population levels before symptoms appear.
