Description

Xiphinema israeliae is a species of soil-dwelling plant-parasitic nematodes belonging to the family Longidoridae and order Dorylaimida. These microscopic worms act as ectoparasites, utilizing their long, needle-like stylet (odontostyle) to pierce plant roots and feed on the nutrient-rich cytoplasm of root cells.

The host range of this nematode is quite broad, causing significant economic losses in viticulture, orchard management, and nursery production. It thrives particularly well in sandy and sandy-loam soils, which allow for better locomotion and access to the deep root systems of its host plants.

The life cycle of the nematode involves an egg stage followed by four juvenile stages and the adult phase. Development is generally slow and highly dependent on soil temperature and moisture levels. Throughout its life, the nematode remains in the soil or close to the root zone, making it a persistent threat to perennial crops.

Damage caused by Xiphinema israeliae is both direct and indirect. Direct feeding causes root tips to become stunted, deformed, and swollen (forming galls), which reduces the plant's nutrient uptake capacity. Indirectly, the wounding of the root tissue provides entry points for soil-borne pathogens and, more critically, the nematode transmits nepoviruses that cause severe plant diseases.

Effective control strategies require an integrated approach. Pre-plant soil fumigation is often necessary in heavily infested fields. Additionally, the use of certified virus-free planting material, maintaining soil health through organic matter, and implementing fallow periods with non-host cover crops can significantly reduce nematode populations and mitigate the risk of viral transmission.
