Italian dagger nematode

Systematic position: The Italian dagger nematode (Xiphinema italiae) belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Enoplea, order Dorylaimida, and family Longidoridae. It is a well-known plant-parasitic nematode that lives in the soil and feeds on the roots of permanent crops.

Affected crops and damage: This nematode primarily attacks grapevines, although it has a wider host range including various fruit trees and woody ornamental plants. The direct mechanical damage to roots is significant, but its primary threat is the transmission of nepoviruses, such as the grapevine fanleaf virus, which can devastate entire vineyards.

Biology and life cycle: Xiphinema italiae lives in the rhizosphere of plants. Its life cycle consists of an egg stage followed by four juvenile stages, each requiring a molt. The nematode feeds using a long, needle-like stylet to pierce root cells and extract nutrients. The population dynamics are heavily dependent on soil texture, moisture levels, and the availability of root hosts.

Nature of injury: Feeding results in the destruction of root tips, creating necrotic lesions. These injuries act as entry points for secondary pathogens and directly interfere with water and mineral uptake. Infected plants often show stunted growth, reduced leaf size, and significant yield losses, often exhibiting symptoms of the viral diseases transmitted by the nematodes.

Control measures: Controlling Xiphinema italiae is challenging because of its ability to survive deep in the soil profile. Integrated pest management strategies include:

• Strict use of certified, virus-free nursery stock.
• Pre-plant soil fumigation or solarization to reduce nematode populations.
• Implementation of cover crops that possess nematicidal properties.
• Regular soil testing to monitor population densities before planting.
