Xiphinema krugi

Xiphinema krugi is a microscopic soil-dwelling worm belonging to the phylum Nematoda, the order Dorylaimida, and the family Longidoridae. As an obligate ectoparasite, this pest resides in the rhizosphere, utilizing a specialized feeding apparatus known as a stylet to pierce plant roots and extract nutrients directly from the cellular tissue.

This nematode species is known to infest a wide variety of agricultural hosts. It poses a significant threat to perennial crops such as vineyards and fruit orchards, as well as several vegetable and field crops. Its presence in the soil disrupts the vital functions of the root system, ultimately leading to poor crop establishment and reduced yields.

The biological cycle of Xiphinema krugi encompasses an egg stage, four larval molting stages, and an adult form. Although their reproductive rate is generally low, these nematodes are highly adapted to soil environments and can migrate through soil layers to find suitable hosts. Their ability to persist in the soil for extended periods makes them particularly challenging to eradicate from infested fields.

The damage caused by this nematode is both physical and physiological. As they feed, they inject enzymatic secretions into the roots, causing localized cell death, severe root pruning, and the formation of galls. The resulting injury prevents the plant from absorbing water and nutrients efficiently, leading to stunting, yellowing (chlorosis), and increased susceptibility to secondary infections by soil-borne pathogens.
