Root-knot dagger nematode

Systematic position. The root-knot dagger nematode (Xiphinema radicicola) belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Enoplea, order Dorylaimida, and family Longidoridae. These microscopic roundworms are obligate parasites that reside within the soil, feeding specifically on the root systems of various plant species.

Affected crops. This pest exhibits a wide host range, making it a significant threat in agricultural and horticultural settings. It commonly infests vegetable crops, orchard trees, small fruits like grapes, and various ornamental plants, often causing reduced vigor and yield losses in commercial plantations.

Biology and life cycle. The nematode utilizes a specialized needle-like organ known as a stylet to penetrate plant root cells and extract nutrients. Its life cycle progresses from eggs through four distinct larval stages, each punctuated by a molt. Reproduction typically occurs within the soil environment, provided that suitable host plants and adequate soil moisture levels are available to support the population.

Nature of damage and pathogenicity. Feeding by Xiphinema radicicola induces the formation of galls and significant physical deformity within the root architecture. Once the roots are compromised, their ability to transport water and essential nutrients is severely hampered, leading to plant chlorosis, stunted growth, and a reduction in crop yield. Furthermore, these nematodes can act as vectors for debilitating plant viral diseases.

Management and control. Controlling this nematode is challenging due to its endoparasitic and soil-dwelling nature. Effective integrated pest management (IPM) strategies include:

• Crop rotation with non-host plants to reduce nematode density in the soil.
• Soil solarization or steam sterilization in greenhouse environments.
• Ensuring the use of certified, nematode-free planting stock.
• Application of biological control agents such as nematophagous fungi or bacteria.
