Xiphinema rivesi

Xiphinema rivesi is a prominent species of ectoparasitic nematode belonging to the family Longidoridae, order Dorylaimida. Often referred to as a type of dagger nematode, it is recognized as a significant soil-borne pest due to its dual capacity to damage plant roots directly and, more importantly, to transmit plant pathogenic viruses such as the Tomato Ringspot Virus (ToRSV).

The host range of Xiphinema rivesi is broad, affecting various perennial crops including grapevines, fruit trees (apple, cherry, peach), and small fruits. These nematodes are typically found in the rhizosphere, where they use their long odontostyle to pierce root cells and extract nutrients, causing cell death and preventing effective water and mineral uptake.

The biology of Xiphinema rivesi is characterized by a long life cycle, typically spanning one to two years under favorable soil conditions. The species reproduces via parthenogenesis or sexual reproduction and goes through four juvenile stages. Their ability to survive for long periods without hosts and their resilience in various soil textures make them extremely difficult to eradicate from established orchards.

The impact of this nematode is twofold: the mechanical damage to roots causes stunted growth, poor nutrient absorption, and yield reduction. However, the transmission of viruses remains the most devastating economic factor. Infected plants show symptoms such as necrosis, leaf chlorosis, and progressive decline, which often lead to total crop failure and the loss of entire orchard blocks.

Management of Xiphinema rivesi requires a multi-faceted approach, as post-planting control is often ineffective. Growers should adopt the following preventive measures:

• Mandatory pre-plant soil testing to assess nematode population density.
• Use of certified virus-free rootstocks and nursery stock.
• Pre-plant soil fumigation to significantly reduce population levels before installing new crops.
• Strategic fallowing and the use of non-host cover crops to starve populations.
