Systematic position and description: Xiphinema sharmai is a soil-inhabiting nematode belonging to the order Dorylaimida and the family Longidoridae. Members of this family are commonly referred to as "dagger nematodes" due to their characteristic long, sharp stylet used to pierce plant cell walls. As an ectoparasite, this species feeds on root tips from the exterior, causing significant physiological stress to the host plant.

Host range: The pest exhibits a wide host range, primarily affecting perennial crops. Its main targets include grapevines, citrus orchards, various nut-bearing trees, and fruit plantations. In agricultural settings, it can also infest vegetable crops, particularly when moving into fields previously occupied by permanent woody hosts, leading to reduced yield and poor plant development.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Xiphinema sharmai takes place entirely within the soil. It comprises an egg stage, four successive larval stages, and the adult stage.
