This microscopic soil-borne pest is widely recognized in nematology for its ability to damage the root systems of various agricultural plants. Primarily found in the rhizosphere, this nematode utilizes its long, needle-like stylet to penetrate plant cells, significantly disrupting the nutrient uptake processes of the host.

The host range of Xiphinema zagrosense includes a variety of perennial crops, with particular significance in vineyards and orchards. The nematode feeds exclusively on the external surfaces of root tips. This localized feeding activity often leads to the destruction of root meristematic tissue, which inhibits the formation of lateral roots and compromises the entire plant's ability to thrive under normal field conditions.
