Mites

Acarida

Description

Mites (Acarina) are members of the class Arachnida and represent a diverse group of plant-feeding organisms. Unlike insects, they possess eight legs as adults and lack distinct antennae. These tiny pests are major limiting factors in agricultural productivity, causing significant economic losses in both food crops and ornamental plants globally.

The host range of mites is extensive, affecting fruits, vegetables, grains, and nursery stock. Spider mites (Tetranychidae) are perhaps the most economically important group, causing widespread damage in greenhouses and field environments. Other significant groups include eriophyid mites, which are responsible for gall formation, and broad mites, which cause severe leaf distortion.

The life cycle of mites is characterized by rapid development and high reproductive rates, especially under warm, arid conditions. A typical life cycle includes egg, larva, nymph, and adult stages. Because of these fast generation times, populations can reach outbreak levels in a very short period, making early intervention critical for successful crop management.

Feeding injury occurs when mites pierce plant cells with their mouthparts and extract sap. This leads to stippling, chlorosis, leaf abscission, and general plant decline. Furthermore, some mites are efficient vectors of plant viruses. The presence of fine webbing, particularly with spider mite infestations, is a key diagnostic indicator for field scouting.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the gold standard for controlling mite populations. Effective strategies include:

  • Regular monitoring and scouting to detect early infestations.
  • Promoting biological control agents, such as predatory mites and lady beetles.
  • Implementing cultural practices like maintaining proper plant hydration to reduce stress.
  • Rotating chemical acaricides with different modes of action to prevent the development of resistance.
  • Sanitation, including the removal of infested weeds and crop debris to break the mite life cycle.
