Petroleum oil I-8A

Description

Petroleum oil I-8A is a highly refined mineral oil used in agriculture as a contact insecticide and acaricide. In the field of plant protection, it is classified as a dormant oil, primarily applied to control pests during their overwintering stage on tree bark and branches.

The mechanism of action is purely physical rather than chemical. Upon application, the oil forms a persistent film that covers the surface of insects and their eggs. This film mechanically blocks the respiratory spiracles, leading to the suffocation and death of the pests. This physical mode of action prevents the development of resistance.

The product is widely used in orchards and vineyards to target a variety of pests, including scale insects, mealybugs, mites, and the overwintering eggs of aphids and psylla. It serves as an essential tool in integrated pest management (IPM) to reduce initial pest populations early in the season.

Application requirements demand precise timing and emulsification. Because oil does not mix with water naturally, it must be properly emulsified with surfactants. It is typically applied in late winter or early spring before bud break; applying it to new green growth can cause phytotoxic burns to the tender plant tissues.

Regarding safety and handling, operators should wear appropriate protective gear, including gloves and goggles, to avoid skin and eye irritation. While the oil has low mammalian toxicity, it should not be applied during the flowering period to avoid disrupting pollination or harming beneficial insects that emerge early in the season.
