Description
Mineral oil, often referred to as horticultural oil, is a highly refined petroleum product utilized as a potent contact insecticide and acaricide. It acts as a physical control agent, making it a sustainable choice for integrated pest management programs in both conventional and organic-leaning agricultural systems.
The mode of action is strictly physical rather than toxicological. When applied to the plant, the oil creates a thin film that covers the target pest. This film blocks the insect's spiracles (breathing pores), leading to suffocation. It also provides excellent control against mite eggs and scale insects by disrupting their cellular respiration and gas exchange process.
These oils are primarily used in orchards and nurseries to target pests that are otherwise hard to reach or resistant to conventional synthetic chemicals. Common targets include aphids, spider mites, mealybugs, and whiteflies. By applying it during the dormant season, farmers can effectively reduce the overwintering population of pests before the growing season begins.
Proper application is crucial to ensure both efficacy and plant safety. It is important to spray during cool weather, ideally between 5°C and 25°C. Application during extreme heat can result in oil-induced phytotoxicity, damaging leaf tissue. High-volume spraying is necessary to ensure that every crevice of the bark or leaf surface is covered, as the oil only kills through direct contact.
- Physical mode of action prevents the development of insect resistance.
- Broad-spectrum control of mites, scales, and aphids.
- Compatible with many other pesticides in tank mixtures.
- Minimal residues left on the fruit or environmental surface.
Safety is a priority when applying mineral oils. Protective equipment should be worn to avoid skin and eye contact. Furthermore, growers must be cautious when tank-mixing, as mineral oil should not be combined with sulfur-based fungicides or captan, as this combination significantly increases the risk of plant injury. Always check the label for specific crop sensitivities.
