Description
Spinetoram is a cutting-edge active ingredient belonging to the spinosyn chemical class. Derived from the fermentation of the soil bacterium Saccharopolyspora spinosa and subsequently modified to improve its performance and stability, spinetoram represents a modern approach to integrated pest management. It is widely recognized by agronomists as a potent insecticide with both contact and ingestion activity.
The mode of action of spinetoram is highly specific, targeting the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the insect's nervous system. By binding to a unique site on these receptors, it causes continuous activation of the nervous system, leading to involuntary muscle contractions, tremors, and paralysis. This distinct physiological pathway is the key to its success in controlling pests that have developed resistance to other common insecticide families, such as organophosphates or pyrethroids.
Spinetoram is effectively used on a broad array of crops, including vegetables, fruit trees, grapes, and various ornamental plants. It is particularly effective against lepidopteran larvae (caterpillars), thrips, and leafminers. Its ability to manage Western flower thrips, which are notoriously difficult to control, makes it an essential tool for growers in greenhouses and open-field vegetable production.
One of the standout features of this active substance is its translaminar movement within the plant tissue. Upon application, the compound is absorbed into the leaf lamina, providing a localized systemic effect. This ensures that the active ingredient remains protected from environmental degradation and provides sustained residual control, effectively targeting insects that feed beneath the leaf surface or within leaf mines.
Safety and responsible application are paramount when using spinetoram. Although it is known for a more favorable toxicological profile compared to older pesticide classes, it remains toxic to bees during the active application window. Therefore, it must not be applied to crops in bloom or when bees are actively foraging. Operators should always adhere to local regulations regarding application rates, use appropriate personal protective equipment, and rotate chemical classes as part of a resistance management strategy.
