Soil buffering capacity is primarily determined by the soil's cation exchange capacity, clay content, and organic matter levels. It acts as a chemical stabilizer, protecting the rhizosphere from drastic pH fluctuations that could otherwise inhibit nutrient uptake or cause aluminum toxicity.
In agricultural practice, understanding buffer capacity is essential for precision liming. High-buffer soils require larger quantities of lime to achieve a desired pH increase, whereas sandy, low-buffer soils react rapidly and require carefully adjusted, frequent applications to avoid over-correction.
A common mistake is applying fertilizers or amendments based solely on the current pH value without considering the soil's resistance to change. Neglecting this parameter often results in ineffective soil conditioning or unexpected physiological stress on crops due to rapid environmental shifts.
