White leaf spot, caused by the fungus Septoria fragariae, is a common and economically significant disease affecting strawberries. While primarily known as a strawberry pathogen, similar species within the Septoria genus affect a wide range of plants including roses, peaches, apricots, grapes, and raspberries, causing localized damage to foliage and reducing overall plant vigor.

The primary symptoms include small, circular, reddish-brown spots on the leaves. As the infection progresses, the centers of these spots turn white or light gray, contrasting with a dark purple or reddish border. In advanced stages, numerous small, black, pin-point structures called pycnidia appear in the center of the spots, releasing spores to spread the fungus.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in disease development. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures are ideal for the release and germination of spores. The pathogen survives the winter in infected plant debris left on the ground, serving as a primary source of inoculum for the following growing season.

The impact of white leaf spot can be substantial if not managed. The infection reduces the functional surface area of the leaves, thereby limiting photosynthesis. This stress weakens the strawberry plants, reduces the size and quality of the berries, and can significantly decrease the plant's ability to survive harsh winter conditions.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted strategy. Cultural practices are the first line of defense, including removing and destroying infected foliage after harvest to reduce the overwintering population. Chemical control involves the timely application of approved fungicides during periods of high humidity and active vegetative growth to prevent widespread infection.
