Didymella

Didymella is a genus of fungi responsible for various plant diseases, most notably Didymella applanata, which causes spur blight in raspberries and blackberries. This pathogen significantly impacts plant health by attacking canes, buds, and leaves, often leading to reduced yields and plant decline.

While commonly associated with berries, certain species within this genus can infect other crops, including tomatoes, where they may cause stem rot and necrotic lesions. The disease impairs the plant's ability to transport nutrients, eventually causing the affected stems to dry out and die, especially during winter dormancy.

Early symptoms typically manifest as dark purple or brownish spots surrounding the leaf nodes on stems. As the infection progresses, the spots expand, and the epidermis begins to crack. By late summer, small, black, pin-head-sized structures called pycnidia appear on the affected areas, serving as the source of further infection.

Development is favored by warm, humid weather and poor air circulation within the plant canopy. Spores are easily disseminated by rain splashes, wind, and agricultural machinery. The fungus thrives in moist environments, making frequent rainfall a primary driver for rapid outbreaks throughout the growing season.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach:

• Pruning and destroying infected canes to reduce inoculum levels.
• Thinning out dense foliage to improve airflow and reduce humidity around the stems.
• Applying preventive fungicides during the early growth stages.
• Maintaining healthy soil and balanced fertilization to improve plant vigor.
