Description
Gnomonia leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by various species of the Gnomonia genus. This pathogen is known for infecting a diverse range of plant species, causing significant damage to the foliage and stems by destroying cellular tissues through the production of fungal enzymes.
The disease frequently affects broadleaf trees like oaks, maples, and sycamores, as well as berries like strawberries and hazelnuts. Each specific Gnomonia species is often host-specific, meaning it primarily targets a certain type of plant within its preferred family.
Early symptoms include the appearance of small, water-soaked spots on the leaves, which gradually expand and turn brown or black. As the disease progresses, necrotic areas may drop out, creating a shot-hole appearance. Severe infestations lead to premature leaf drop, which can cause significant stress to the host plant.
Moist and humid weather conditions are the primary drivers of Gnomonia spread. Spores are released from perithecia found on overwintered fallen leaves during rainy spring days and are spread to healthy foliage by wind and water splashes. High canopy density often exacerbates the disease by trapping moisture.
Economic damage is largely due to the reduction of photosynthetic capacity, which impacts plant growth and fruit production. While usually not lethal to mature trees, chronic infection can weaken the plant, making it more susceptible to secondary pests and environmental stressors such as drought or cold.
- Remove and destroy fallen leaves to reduce inoculum.
- Prune branches to improve airflow within the canopy.
- Apply fungicide sprays during the early growth stages.
- Ensure proper spacing between plants during installation.
