Soft scale

Coccus

Description

The genus Coccus is a major representative of the Coccidae family, commonly known as soft scales. Unlike armored scales, these pests do not form a separate, removable waxy shell; instead, their entire body becomes hardened and serves as a protective cover against predators and environmental stress.

These insects are widespread pests that feed on a variety of woody plants, ornamentals, and fruit crops, including citrus, ficus, and laurel. They are strictly sap-feeders, using their piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract nutrients directly from the plant's vascular system, which can cause significant stunted growth or plant decline.

The life cycle begins with eggs laid underneath the female's protective scale. After hatching, the immature stages, known as crawlers, move across the foliage to find a suitable feeding site. Once they settle and begin feeding, they generally remain stationary for the rest of their lives, focusing energy on growth and reproduction.

Damage caused by soft scales is twofold: direct loss of plant vigor due to sap extraction and the indirect harm caused by honeydew. Honeydew excreted by the scales accumulates on leaves, facilitating the growth of sooty mold, which drastically reduces the photosynthetic capability of the host plant and creates an unsightly appearance.

Effective management strategies include:

  • Application of systemic insecticides timed to coincide with the crawler stage.
  • Use of horticultural oils that suffocate the insects by blocking their respiratory pores.
  • Biological control measures, such as introducing natural parasitoid wasps or predatory beetles.
  • Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce the overall pest population.
