Cucumber mosaic

Description

Cucumber mosaic is a destructive plant disease caused by the Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), a highly polyphagous pathogen. It is recognized as one of the most significant viruses in agriculture due to its ability to infect a vast range of plant species. The host range includes diverse vegetables, ornamental plants, and berry crops, with the common raspberry being particularly susceptible to its systemic effects.

The characteristic symptoms of this disease include a mosaic-like pattern of yellow and green mottling on the leaves. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, leaf distortion, and vein clearing. Fruit symptoms are equally problematic, manifesting as blotchy discoloration, bumps, and irregular shapes, which render the harvest commercially unmarketable and often unpalatable.

The development and transmission of the virus are primarily mediated by aphids, which act as vectors by feeding on infected plants and carrying the virus to healthy ones. The virus can also survive in the rhizomes of perennial weeds during the winter months. In the spring, these weeds serve as the primary reservoir from which aphids spread the infection to new vegetable beds and raspberry patches.

The economic impact of Cucumber mosaic is substantial, as it leads to decreased photosynthesis, reduced vigor, and significant yield losses. In severe cases, the infected plant fails to produce a viable crop and may eventually die. In raspberry cultivation, the infection causes a decline in cane growth and berry production, often requiring the complete removal of infected plants to protect the rest of the plantation.

Effective management focuses on preventing the spread of the pathogen:

  • Rely on resistant cultivars whenever possible.
  • Control aphid populations with systemic insecticides or biological controls.
  • Maintain a weed-free environment to eliminate reservoir hosts.
  • Sanitize all pruning tools after working on each plant to avoid mechanical transmission.
  • Promptly rogue and destroy any plants showing clear mosaic symptoms.
