Cucumber mosaic

The Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is a pathogenic plant virus belonging to the genus Cucumovirus within the Bromoviridae family. It is recognized as one of the most destructive plant viruses globally due to its incredibly broad host range, infecting more than 1,200 species of monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants, ranging from vegetables to ornamental species.

The virus induces severe systemic symptoms, most notably mosaic-like chlorosis (yellow and green mottling) on leaves, severe leaf deformation, leaf curling, and overall plant stunting. Infected crops, such as cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers, often exhibit misshapen fruits with necrotic spotting, which significantly reduces commercial yield and agricultural marketability.

The biology of CMV is inextricably linked to its aphid vectors, with over 80 species, such as Aphis gossypii, capable of transmission. The virus is transmitted in a non-persistent, non-circulative manner, meaning aphids can acquire and transmit the virus within seconds during brief probes of plant tissue. Mechanical transmission through pruning shears or contact during field management is also a critical factor.

Environmental conditions that favor aphid population explosions, typically warm and humid weather, facilitate rapid field spread. The virus persists through the winter in perennial weed hosts and symptomatic greenhouse plants. These sources serve as primary reservoirs from which vectors introduce the virus to new healthy plantings early in the growing season.

Management and control strategies are essential for minimizing economic loss:

• Deployment of resistant or tolerant crop cultivars.
• Aggressive monitoring and control of aphid vector populations using insecticides and reflective mulches.
• Sanitation protocols including the removal of infected host plants and nearby weed reservoirs.
• Strict hygiene measures, including the disinfection of tools to prevent mechanical transmission.
• Use of virus-indexed, certified high-quality seeds to prevent early-stage infection.
