A high-efficiency systemic herbicide for selective post-emergence control of grasses and broad-leaved weeds in maize.
Description
Protecting Maize Fields with ASTRAL, MD
Combining Austrian innovation with global manufacturing capabilities, ASTRAL, MD by Nufarm GmbH is a cornerstone for professional maize weed management. As a systemic post-emergence herbicide, it is specifically engineered to target both annual and perennial grasses, as well as a selection of problematic broad-leaved weeds. The product’s oil-based dispersion (OD) formulation is a key advantage, ensuring rapid uptake and high rainfastness even in unpredictable weather conditions.
The Power of Nicosulfuron
At the heart of ASTRAL, MD is nicosulfuron, a highly effective active ingredient known for its selectivity. When applied as a foliar treatment at a rate of 1–1.25 L/ha, it provides robust protection against common agricultural threats, including:
- Perennial grasses: Couch grass (Elymus repens).
- Annual grasses: Common barnyard grass, yellow foxtail.
- Broad-leaved weeds: Redroot pigweed, field mustard, field pennycress, shepherd's purse, and common chickweed.
By inhibiting the plant enzyme acetolactate synthase (ALS), ASTRAL, MD effectively shuts down the metabolic processes of susceptible weeds, causing rapid growth cessation and eventual mortality. Since it is a selective herbicide, it allows maize crops to continue thriving without competition for nutrients, water, or sunlight.
Application and Reliability
ASTRAL, MD is designed for convenience in field operations. As a post-emergence "insurance" herbicide, its application timing is flexible, allowing farmers to wait until weed populations are visible and vulnerable. With a maximum of one application per season, it simplifies the weed control program while maintaining high efficiency. The product is manufactured under strict quality standards by Nufarm in Austria and authorized facilities in China, ensuring consistent performance for agricultural professionals. As a Class 2 hazard product, it is designed for use by trained personnel following professional agricultural safety protocols.

By type of action
Depending on their ability to move through living tissues, herbicides are divided into contact and systemic. Contact herbicides cause local damage to plant tissue upon contact, which dies or gradually degrades. This action does not always completely destroy the plant; often, its... |
