Reliable soil-based weed control for winter rapeseed crops powered by clomazone.
Description
Mechanism of Action and Selectivity of Clomazone
Clod, EC by Rangoli is a selective soil-applied herbicide based on the active ingredient clomazone. Unlike contact herbicides, clomazone blocks the biosynthesis of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll and carotenoids) in emerging weed seedlings. In practice, this causes weeds to die immediately upon germination: lacking pigments, the seedlings are unable to photosynthesize and die off quickly, preventing them from competing with the winter rapeseed crop.
Application Features in Winter Rapeseed
The main challenge in managing weeds during the early growth stages of rapeseed is high competition. Clod is applied as a pre-emergence treatment, creating a protective 'shield' on the soil surface. As a systemic herbicide, it is absorbed through the root system of weeds, providing control over problematic species such as cleavers (Galium aparine), common lambsquarters, field violet, shepherd's purse, common chickweed, and purple dead-nettle.
Technical Regulations and Stability
- Formulation: Emulsifiable concentrate ensures high stability of the working solution and uniform distribution of the active ingredient within the soil profile.
- Application Rate: 0.15–0.2 L/ha. Precise application is crucial to establish a consistent protective barrier.
- Hazard Class: 3 (moderately hazardous substance), requiring standard safety measures when handling agrochemicals.
- Number of Applications: Once per season. This is sufficient to eliminate the first 'flush' of weeds during the critical development period of the crop.
The efficacy of Clod depends directly on soil moisture levels and the quality of seedbed preparation. A fine, well-tilled soil surface without large clods allows the active ingredient to form a continuous barrier that weed sprouts cannot penetrate.

Depending on their ability to move through living tissues, herbicides are divided into contact and systemic. Contact herbicides cause local damage to plant tissue upon contact, which dies or gradually degrades. This action does not always completely destroy the plant; often, its... |
