A selective contact herbicide for effective control of broad-leaved weeds in soybean crops.
Description
Mechanism of Action and Selectivity
"Protege, SL" is a highly selective contact herbicide based on the properties of bentazone (chemical class of benzothiadiazinones). Unlike systemic products, "Protege" does not move through the phloem but acts immediately upon contact with the leaf surface of the weed. The active ingredient blocks the process of photosynthesis (the Hill reaction) by interrupting electron transport in photosystem II. For weeds, this results in an almost instantaneous cessation of growth and subsequent tissue necrosis. Due to its selective mechanism, soybeans can metabolize bentazone into inactive forms, ensuring a high safety profile for the crop when application rates are strictly followed.
Technical Application and Efficacy
The product is formulated as an aqueous solution, which ensures excellent solubility and rapid preparation of the spray mixture without the risk of clogging sprayer nozzles. The primary function of "Protege" is the control of a broad spectrum of dicotyledonous weeds, including the most problematic species:
- Common ragweed and jimsonweed;
- Common lambsquarters and redroot pigweed;
- Field mustard, shepherd's purse, and common chickweed;
- Catchweed bedstraw.
To achieve maximum biological efficacy, it is crucial to ensure high-quality coverage of the leaf surface. Since the product has a contact action, the uniformity of droplet distribution is paramount. The application rate is 1.5–3 L/ha depending on the weed species composition and their growth stage. It is recommended to apply the product during the active growth phase of weeds (up to 4-6 leaves), as mature plants may exhibit reduced susceptibility to the treatment.
Agronomic Strategy
"Protege" operates effectively as a post-emergence (insurance) herbicide. A single application within the recommended window allows for the "cleaning" of soybean fields without the need for multiple passes. A critical technological constraint is the pre-harvest interval (PHI) of at least 30 days. The product is classified as Hazard Class 3, requiring standard safety protocols when handling agrochemicals. Manufactured by "Jiangsu AgroChem Laboratory Co. Ltd." (registered by "ChimAgroMarketing"), this product is a reliable tool for integrated soybean protection systems.

Depending on their ability to move through living tissues, herbicides are divided into contact and systemic. Contact herbicides cause local damage to plant tissue upon contact, which dies or gradually degrades. This action does not always completely destroy the plant; often, its... |
