Field experience: why this cultivator stays in the game

When you start using the Smaragd, it becomes clear why this German machinery retains its resale value so well. This isn’t a piece of equipment that forces you to spend every evening in the workshop. After years of running it through various soil profiles — from heavy loams to stubborn, dry stubble — I have a very clear picture of its capabilities.

Endurance and operational maintenance

The main advantage is the tine geometry. Plugging in corn stalks simply doesn’t happen unless you’re deliberately trying to work in mud. The staggered layout of the shares ensures excellent weed cutting and crop residue incorporation. In terms of fuel consumption: at an average engine speed of 1800–1900 RPM, the Smaragd pulls smoothly without putting excessive strain on the transmission.

• Consumables replacement: Changing the shares is straightforward. Access to the bolts is unobstructed, and if you stick to original hardware, you won’t face any seized bolts.
• Depth adjustment: The mechanism is foolproof — a couple of clips, two minutes, and you are good to go. No hydraulic gremlins to deal with in the middle of a workday.
• Maintenance: Greasing takes about 5 minutes per shift. It’s a small price to pay to keep the roller bearings running for years.

Of course, rock-strewn fields require some vigilance. The spring reset mechanism is reliable, but after three or four seasons, it’s worth checking the spring tension. Other than that, it’s a workhorse that you can hand over to an operator with full confidence that it won’t come back with a broken frame or twisted tines.
