This pathogen has an extensive host range, affecting various crops such as tomatoes, potatoes, onions, carrots, and citrus fruits. Infection manifests as dark, sunken, velvety lesions that may enlarge and eventually cover the entire surface of the fruit or vegetable. The tissues underneath the affected area usually become soft and dark brown or black due to the accumulation of fungal spores.

The biology of the pathogen involves the production of conidia that are easily dispersed by wind, water splashes, and insects. Alternaria species are known to persist in soil, plant debris, and on seeds for long periods. Once conditions become favorable, the spores germinate and penetrate the host tissues, typically through natural openings or small mechanical wounds.

Alternaria rot thrives in warm temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C combined with high moisture levels. In post-harvest settings, improper storage conditions, such as high relative humidity and poor ventilation, facilitate rapid spread of the disease among stored goods.

The economic impact of Alternaria rot is severe, as it ruins crop marketability and can lead to significant storage decay. Integrated disease management is essential for control, involving crop rotation, removal of infected crop residues, and the use of resistant varieties.
