Ascochyta leaf spot of cereals

The pathogen Ascochyta graminea belongs to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, and genus Ascochyta. It is a specialized fungal parasite affecting various cereal crops and wild grasses. The disease it induces, known as Ascochyta leaf spot, primarily targets the vegetative parts of the plant, causing necrosis and significant tissue degradation.

Primary hosts for this pathogen include barley, wheat, oats, and various wild cereal species. Symptoms typically appear as light-colored spots on the leaf blades, often surrounded by a dark brown margin. Over time, small black fruiting bodies known as pycnidia develop within these spots, serving as the primary source for conidia production throughout the growing season.

The disease cycle involves the pathogen overwintering in infected plant debris, soil, or on seeds as mycelium or dormant pycnidia. When favorable environmental conditions, such as high humidity and moderate temperatures, occur, conidia are released from the pycnidia. They are disseminated via rain splashes or wind currents to healthy plant tissues, initiating the infection process.

Development and spread of the fungus are most rapid during periods of high humidity (exceeding 70–80%) and temperatures ranging from +15°C to +22°C. These conditions facilitate rapid spore germination and colonization of new leaves, often leading to widespread infection across a field if weather patterns persist and host susceptibility is high.

The economic impact of Ascochyta leaf spot is linked to the premature senescence of leaves, which inhibits photosynthesis and leads to reduced grain yield and quality. Infected plants may also exhibit increased vulnerability to secondary infections. Control strategies focus on integrated pest management, including:

• sowing certified disease-free seeds;
• crop rotation to reduce soil-borne inoculum;
• deep plowing of crop residues;
• targeted fungicide applications during critical growth stages.
