Black mold

Aspergillus niger

Description

Taxonomic classification: Black mold, caused by the fungus Aspergillus niger, is a member of the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, and genus Aspergillus. This microscopic filamentous fungus is widely distributed in the environment and acts as a common soil saprotroph, but it can turn into a destructive facultative pathogen when plants are stressed or stored improperly.

Diseases caused: Aspergillus niger is the primary cause of black mold disease in various agricultural commodities. It is notorious for causing neck rot in onions and garlic, which leads to significant losses in the produce industry. Furthermore, it affects a broad range of crops including grapes, citrus fruits, tomatoes, peanuts, and stored cereals, causing severe decay and rot.

Biology and life cycle: The fungus reproduces primarily through asexual spores called conidia, which are produced in massive quantities and appear as a fine black powder. These spores are highly resistant to environmental stressors and disperse through wind, water, and human activities. The mycelium secretes various enzymes and organic acids that allow it to penetrate plant tissues and degrade them rapidly.

Environmental conditions: This fungus thrives in warm and humid conditions. The optimal temperature range for its development is between +25°C and +35°C. High humidity levels combined with poor ventilation are the primary drivers that promote the growth of the pathogen during the storage of harvest or in the field during hot, humid summer seasons.

Damage and control: The economic impact of Aspergillus niger is substantial, particularly due to post-harvest losses and contamination. To manage and prevent the spread of the pathogen, producers should:

  • Ensure proper drying and curing of harvested produce before storage.
  • Maintain low temperatures and low humidity in warehouses to inhibit fungal growth.
  • Implement rigorous crop rotation and field sanitation practices.
  • Sort harvested products to remove any damaged or already infected items.
