The genus Bipolaris belongs to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, and includes dangerous phytopathogens responsible for a wide range of plant diseases. These fungi are primary agents of various leaf spots, root rots, and helminthosporium diseases. The most significant species include Bipolaris sorokiniana and Bipolaris maydis, which primarily impact cereal crops and maize.
Major crops susceptible to Bipolaris infection include wheat, barley, maize, rice, and sorghum. Symptoms typically manifest as dark brown or black spots on leaves, stems, and glumes. In cases of severe infection, the pathogen causes tissue necrosis, premature plant wilting, and development of seedling blights, significantly reducing the density and overall health of the crop stand.
The fungal biology involves both asexual and sexual reproductive stages. The primary inoculum source is infected plant debris in the soil, where the fungus persists as mycelium and conidia for several years. The dissemination of the pathogen is mediated by conidia, which are carried by wind or rain splash onto healthy plant tissues, where they germinate in the presence of surface moisture.
Infection and disease development are favored by moderately warm weather and high humidity, particularly during the tillering and jointing stages. Optimal conditions involve temperatures ranging from +20°C to +28°C accompanied by frequent rainfall. High moisture is critical for spore germination, often leading to epiphytotic outbreaks during wet seasons, particularly in cereal production areas.
The economic impact of Bipolaris includes significant loss of photosynthetic leaf area, reduced grain yield, and lower seed quality. Losses can range from 20% to 40% depending on environmental conditions and disease pressure. Effective management strategies include the use of resistant varieties, crop rotation, deep incorporation of crop residues, seed treatment, and timely application of fungicides during the growing season.
