Bipolaris sacchari is a significant fungal plant pathogen belonging to the Ascomycota phylum. It is primarily recognized as the causal agent of "eyespot" disease, a condition that severely affects sugarcane crops worldwide, leading to substantial yield losses in tropical and subtropical agriculture.
The disease is characterized by the appearance of distinct lesions on the leaves, which resemble an eye with a dark brown necrotic center and a yellow-to-tan halo. As the infection progresses, these spots coalesce, resulting in widespread leaf blighting, reduced photosynthetic capacity, and a significant decrease in sucrose accumulation within the sugarcane stalks.
The pathogen's life cycle is driven by the production of conidia, which serve as the primary inoculum. Disseminated by wind and rain splash, these spores infect the plant via stomata or epidermal wounds. Once inside, the fungus secretes a host-specific toxin known as helminthosporoside, which triggers the characteristic tissue breakdown observed in the eyespot symptoms.
