Description

Botryotinia ricini is a specialized phytopathogenic fungus belonging to the class Ascomycetes. It acts as the primary causative agent of gray mold on castor bean plants (Ricinus communis). The fungus is also widely recognized by its anamorphic state, Botrytis ricini, which is frequently observed during the active phase of infection.

The fungus primarily targets the inflorescences of the castor plant. The infection leads to the development of a dense, grayish-white layer of conidial sporulation on the racemes. As the disease progresses, the tissues rot, causing the flowers and developing capsules to decay, which severely impacts the yield and quality of the castor oil seeds.

The disease cycle is characterized by the production of abundant conidia that are disseminated via wind, rain splashes, and insects. During the off-season, the pathogen survives as sclerotia in infected plant debris left in the soil. Under favorable conditions, these sclerotia germinate, producing spores that initiate primary infections when the plants start to bloom.

The development of gray mold is heavily influenced by environmental factors. High relative humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures are the most critical conditions that favor the rapid proliferation of the fungus. Dense planting and poor field aeration exacerbate these conditions, often leading to rapid spreading of the disease across the entire plantation.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Essential practices include practicing crop rotation to reduce inoculum pressure, deep plowing to bury infested plant debris, and the use of resistant castor cultivars. In areas where the disease is endemic, timely application of chemical fungicides during the flowering stage is crucial to protect the inflorescences from infection.
