Description

Botrytis is a genus of filamentous fungi that includes some of the most destructive plant pathogens in agriculture. The most notable species, Botrytis cinerea, is the primary cause of gray mold (or bunch rot). This pathogen is necrotrophic, meaning it kills plant cells to feed on the organic matter, affecting hundreds of species including strawberries, grapes, tomatoes, and various ornamental flowers.

The primary symptom of a Botrytis infection is the characteristic fuzzy gray growth on the surface of the plant tissue, which is composed of spores (conidia). As the fungus colonizes the plant, it causes rapid necrosis, rot, and collapse of stems or fruits. The pathogen can infect plants at all stages of growth, from seedlings causing "damping-off" to mature fruits and post-harvest crops in storage facilities.

The life cycle of Botrytis is driven by its ability to persist as dormant sclerotia or mycelia in soil and plant debris. In the spring, these structures produce spores that are easily disseminated by wind, water splashes, or tools. The fungus is highly opportunistic; it typically enters through wounds, insect feeding sites, or natural openings like stomata, especially when the plant's defenses are lowered.

Environmental conditions are the main catalyst for Botrytis outbreaks. High relative humidity, persistent leaf wetness, and cool to moderate temperatures are essential for infection. The pathogen thrives in high-density plantings where airflow is restricted, as these conditions keep the foliage wet for extended periods, providing a perfect climate for spore germination and colonization.

Management of Botrytis requires a multi-faceted approach to minimize infection risk:

  • Sanitation practices, such as removing infected leaves and fruit from the field.
  • Improving air circulation and ventilation in greenhouses to reduce humidity.
  • Avoidance of overhead irrigation to keep foliage dry.
  • Timely application of chemical or biological fungicides during vulnerable growth stages, such as flowering.
