Description

Colletotrichum trifolii is an ascomycete fungus that serves as the primary causal agent of alfalfa anthracnose. This pathogen is highly specialized and poses a significant threat to alfalfa (Medicago sativa) production globally. The fungus thrives in warm, humid conditions, making it particularly devastating in regions with high rainfall during the growing season.

The disease symptoms typically appear on stems and crown tissues as diamond-shaped or circular lesions with dark borders. As the infection progresses, the lesions enlarge and merge, often girdling the stem. This disrupts the plant's vascular system, leading to wilting, "shepherd's crook" bending of the stems, and eventual death of the affected plant tissue.

The life cycle of the pathogen is driven by asexual reproduction via conidia. These spores are produced in structures called acervuli, which emerge through the host epidermis. During periods of wet weather, these conidia are dispersed by rain splashes or irrigation water to healthy plant tissues. The fungus overwinters primarily in infected crop residues and can persist in the soil for extended periods.

Economic damage caused by Colletotrichum trifolii includes reduced yield, poor forage quality, and significant stand thinning. Because the fungus attacks the crown, infected plants are significantly more susceptible to winter injury and drought stress. In severe cases, the disease can lead to the complete loss of productive alfalfa stands within two to three years.

Integrated management is essential for controlling anthracnose. Producers are advised to plant resistant cultivars, which is the most effective defense mechanism. Additionally, crop rotation, proper sanitation by removing or burying infected residues, and adjusting harvest schedules to prevent the spread of spores during wet periods are critical components of a successful agricultural pest management program.
