Systematic position and type of pathogen: The pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum) is a member of the order Hemiptera. It is a highly significant agricultural pest that specifically targets legume crops, causing direct physiological damage and acting as a primary vector for various plant viruses that severely affect crop yield.
Diseases and host crops: This pest primarily affects peas, alfalfa, clovers, and vetches. By feeding on phloem sap, the aphids cause leaves to curl, terminal shoots to wilt, and flower buds to drop. Furthermore, their role as a vector for the Pea Enation Mosaic Virus (PEMV) poses a major threat to the quality and volume of grain production.
Biology and life cycle: The pea aphid exhibits a complex life cycle, involving both sexual and asexual reproduction. During the growing season, females reproduce parthenogenetically, producing multiple generations in a short time. They overwinter as eggs on perennial legumes and migrate to pea fields once the temperature rises in the spring.
Conditions for development and damage: Aphid outbreaks are favored by mild temperatures and moderate humidity. The population density can increase exponentially within days. Damage is most severe during the flowering and pod-filling stages, where heavy infestations lead to stunted plant growth and significant yield losses in commercial farming.
Control and management measures:
- Crop rotation to break the aphid life cycle and avoid overwintering sites.
- Planting early-maturing varieties to avoid peak aphid population periods.
