It is widely recognized as one of the causal agents of Fusarium diseases, including root rots, stem blights, and ear infections in various economically important crops. The species is part of the complex biological diversity of soil-borne fungi that pose a constant threat to global agricultural production.
The host range of Gibberella intricans is broad, heavily impacting cereals such as wheat, barley, and maize, as well as several leguminous plants. The infection manifests in several ways, often starting as seedling blight or necrotic lesions at the crown base. As the infection progresses, it disrupts water and nutrient transport, causing the plant to wither, lodge, or produce poorly filled, shriveled grains covered in fungal mycelium.
The biology of this fungus is centered on its survival in soil and crop debris. It can persist through adverse conditions by forming resilient structures such as chlamydospores. When environmental conditions improve, the fungus resumes growth, producing asexual spores (macroconidia) for rapid dissemination during the growing season.
