Gilbertella persicaria

Gilbertella persicaria

Description

Gilbertella persicaria is a destructive fungal pathogen belonging to the phylum Mucoromycota. This organism is recognized primarily as a causal agent of soft rot, which affects a wide variety of fruit-bearing plants, causing significant economic losses during the post-harvest period and in warm, humid field conditions.

The host range of this pathogen is extensive, targeting fleshy fruits such as strawberries, peaches, tomatoes, and various cucurbits. Infection leads to rapid tissue breakdown, where the fruit quickly turns into a macerated, soft mass. This process is often accompanied by the development of dark, fuzzy sporangia, which signify the reproductive stage of the fungus.

The lifecycle of Gilbertella persicaria is characterized by high reproductive efficiency. It produces numerous sporangiospores that are easily disseminated by air currents, splashing water, and mechanical contact. The pathogen requires entry points to initiate infection; these are usually provided by mechanical wounds, insect punctures, or natural physiological fissures on the fruit surface.

Optimal development occurs under conditions of high humidity and temperatures between 25°C and 30°C. Once the environment provides these conducive factors, the pathogen can spread through a storage container or a field within a very short timeframe. Its ability to colonize decaying organic matter allows it to persist in the environment even between cropping cycles.

Controlling this pathogen requires a proactive approach aimed at reducing inoculum and preventing fruit damage. Essential management strategies include:

  • Maintaining rigorous sanitation protocols in storage facilities to eliminate spore buildup.
  • Implementing precise post-harvest temperature management to inhibit fungal growth.
  • Reducing fruit injuries during harvest, sorting, and packaging processes.
  • Managing insect pests that create entry points for the fungus.
  • Applying systemic fungicides where legally permitted and necessary for high-risk crops.
