Helminthosporium carbonum (synonym Bipolaris zeicola, teleomorph Cochliobolus carbonum) is a filamentous fungus belonging to the order Pleosporales. It is a significant phytopathogen that primarily targets members of the Poaceae family. This fungus acts as a hemi-biotroph, surviving in both living host tissues and necrotic plant debris within the soil environment.

Diseases and host crops
The pathogen is primarily associated with corn (maize), where it causes Northern leaf spot and ear rot. Infection symptoms appear as lesions on leaves, which may vary from small circular spots to elongated necrotic areas, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. In severe cases, the lesions coalesce, leading to premature leaf death and reduced photosynthetic efficiency of the plant.

Biology and lifecycle
The fungus overwinters as mycelium and conidia on infected crop residues. With the arrival of favorable spring conditions—specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures—the conidia are disseminated via wind or rain splash. Once they land on the leaves of a susceptible host, the conidia germinate and penetrate the tissue, eventually producing a new generation of spores to perpetuate the infection cycle.

Conditions for development and impact
Disease development is most favorable when temperatures stay between 20°C and 28°C accompanied by prolonged leaf wetness. The economic impact of Helminthosporium carbonum can be severe, as it reduces grain filling and compromises the overall health of the crop. Yield losses are particularly acute in monoculture systems where the inoculum load in the soil remains high year after year.
