Description

Taxonomy and nature of the pathogen: Soybean mosaic virus (SMV) is a member of the Potyvirus genus, family Potyviridae. It is a plant-pathogenic RNA virus characterized by filamentous, flexible particles. Being a widespread pathogen in tropical and temperate regions, including Indonesia, it poses a severe threat to soybean production by interfering with plant physiological processes.

Symptoms and host range: The virus specifically targets the soybean plant (Glycine max). Symptoms vary depending on the virus strain and host genotype, typically manifesting as light and dark green mosaic patterns on leaves, leaf rugosity, and downward curling. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, shortened internodes, and, crucially, discolored (pigmented) seed coats, especially around the hilum.

Biology and disease cycle: The virus persists primarily through infected seeds. Once seedlings emerge, the virus is spread locally and across fields by various aphid species in a non-persistent, stylet-borne manner. Aphids acquire the virus during brief feeding probes on infected plants and immediately transmit it to healthy plants. This mechanism allows for rapid outbreaks within soybean fields during the growing season.

Environmental conditions and impact: Disease severity is strongly influenced by the population density of aphid vectors. Warm temperatures that favor aphid reproduction accelerate the spread of SMV. The economic impact is significant: yield losses can range from 20% up to 80% in susceptible cultivars, accompanied by reduced seed quality, lower oil/protein content, and poor germination rates in subsequent seasons.

Control and management measures: Managing SMV requires an integrated strategy, as there is no chemical cure for viral infections once a plant is infected:

  • Utilizing high-quality, virus-free seed stocks.
  • Planting resistant or tolerant soybean varieties as the primary defense.
  • Implementing rigorous weed management to remove alternative virus hosts.
  • Applying insecticides to manage aphid vectors during early growth stages.
  • Establishing isolation zones between soybean fields to reduce secondary spread.
