Description
Southern corn leaf blight (SCLB) is a major fungal disease of maize caused by the pathogen Bipolaris maydis (previously known as Helminthosporium maydis). This fungus belongs to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, and class Dothideomycetes. It is globally recognized as a significant threat to corn production, capable of causing severe yield losses in favorable environments.
Symptoms of the disease initially appear as small, tan, spindle-shaped lesions on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these lesions enlarge and coalesce, often developing a characteristic light brown or dark necrotic center. Under high humidity, the lesions produce a heavy growth of dark-colored fungal spores, which makes the affected tissue appear velvety or dirty, eventually leading to widespread leaf blight and plant necrosis.
The life cycle of Bipolaris maydis involves survival through the winter as mycelium or conidia on infected corn debris. During the growing season, moisture and warm temperatures trigger the production of new conidia. These spores are disseminated primarily by wind and splashing rain to healthy maize tissues. The fungus requires high humidity and temperatures between 20°C and 30°C for optimal infection and rapid secondary spreading throughout the field.
The economic impact of the disease is profound, particularly when infection occurs early in the season. Blighted leaves lose their photosynthetic capacity, preventing the plant from properly filling its ears. This results in reduced kernel weight, poor quality of the grain, and increased susceptibility to stalk rot, which leads to lodging and harvest difficulties.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize the primary inoculum and protect the crop. Recommended strategies include:
- Planting resistant or tolerant corn hybrids as the first line of defense.
- Implementing crop rotation with non-host crops to reduce soil-borne pathogen levels.
- Tillage practices that promote rapid decomposition of corn residues.
- Applying fungicides during the critical growth stages if environmental conditions favor disease development.
