Mucor circinelloides

Mucor circinelloides

Description

Mucor circinelloides is a fungal pathogen belonging to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Zygomycota, and the genus Mucor. It is primarily a saprotrophic organism that can become a serious plant pathogen, particularly after harvest. This mold is ubiquitous in nature, commonly found in soils, decaying organic matter, and the atmosphere of agricultural storage facilities.

The pathogen is known for causing mucor rot, a destructive post-harvest disease affecting a wide range of horticultural commodities. Susceptible crops include potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, strawberries, and stone fruits. Once established, the fungus secretes enzymes that degrade cell walls, leading to rapid tissue softening and a characteristic greyish, fuzzy mold growth on the surface of the produce.

The biology of Mucor circinelloides is defined by its rapid colonization rate. It reproduces primarily via sporangiospores, which are microscopic and easily disseminated by wind currents. Under favorable conditions, these spores germinate almost immediately upon contact with a suitable substrate, especially if the surface has any microscopic physical damage or bruises resulting from mechanical harvesting.

The development of this fungus is highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically humidity and temperature. It thrives in high-humidity environments (above 85% RH) and warm temperatures, typically between 15°C and 25°C. In storage conditions with poor air circulation, a single infected fruit can serve as an inoculum source for the entire batch, leading to massive post-harvest spoilage.

Management and control strategies are essential to minimize economic losses:

  • Implementing strict sanitation protocols for storage facilities, including regular disinfection.
  • Ensuring low-temperature storage (near 0°C) to inhibit fungal growth.
  • Optimizing ventilation to maintain humidity levels below the threshold for spore germination.
  • Reducing physical injury to crops during harvesting, handling, and transportation.
  • Monitoring stored products periodically to detect and remove infected items early.
