It is primarily recognized as a soil-borne saprotroph, though it frequently acts as an opportunistic pathogen that colonizes harvested plant tissues, leading to severe decay.

Associated diseases and host crops. This fungus causes mucor rot, a common form of "soft rot" or mold infestation. It primarily affects horticultural commodities, including tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and various root vegetables like carrots and potatoes. It is particularly problematic during storage, transit, and retail marketing phases.

Biology and life cycle. The fungus produces a rapid-growing white or grayish mycelium. It reproduces via sporangiospores, which are contained within sporangia at the tips of specialized structures. These spores are highly resilient and easily dispersed by air currents, water splashes, or contaminated equipment, allowing for swift colonization of nutrient-rich plant substrates.

Development and environmental conditions. Mucor fragilis thrives in environments characterized by high relative humidity (typically above 80%) and moderate temperatures. The infection process is highly opportunistic, starting immediately after the pathogen makes contact with injured, bruised, or cracked plant surfaces. Lack of proper ventilation significantly accelerates the spread of the disease.

Economic impact and control measures. The economic damage is significant due to total loss of marketability of infected produce. Effective control depends on integrated post-harvest management: sanitation of storage facilities, maintaining optimal low-temperature regimes, ensuring proper airflow to prevent condensation on produce, and careful handling to minimize mechanical wounding.
