Penicillium citrinum

Penicillium citrinum

Description

Penicillium citrinum is a fungus classified within the Kingdom Fungi, Genus Penicillium, Species Penicillium citrinum. It is an anamorphic fungus frequently found in soils worldwide. While it serves as a decomposer of organic matter, it is recognized in agriculture as a significant phytopathogen capable of causing serious diseases in stored agricultural products.

The primary economic impact of this pathogen involves the contamination of stored grains, rice, legumes, and various fruits. It is a common agent of blue mold rot. When attacking seeds, the fungus penetrates the pericarp and colonizes the endosperm and germ, leading to seed deterioration, loss of viability, and poor seedling vigor during subsequent planting.

The biology of the species is characterized by rapid asexual reproduction through the formation of conidia. These microscopic spores are highly resilient and dispersed primarily by wind and machinery. The fungus thrives in a vegetative state, efficiently utilizing nutrients from the host, which allows it to form dense mycelial mats on the surface of colonized tissues.

Development and spread are strongly correlated with moisture content and temperature. Penicillium citrinum remains dormant under dry conditions but becomes highly active when grain moisture levels exceed 14–15% and temperatures range between 20°C and 25°C. Stagnant air in storage facilities creates microenvironments that favor rapid fungal outbreaks and heat generation.

The severity of this pathogen is twofold: physical degradation of crop quality and the production of harmful mycotoxins, specifically citrinin. This toxic metabolite poses severe health risks to livestock and humans. Effective control and management include:

  • Maintaining grain moisture levels below the critical threshold during storage.
  • Implementing rigorous hygiene and sanitation in grain bins and warehouses.
  • Utilizing ventilation systems to manage temperature and humidity.
  • Treating seeds with appropriate broad-spectrum fungicides prior to sowing.
