Penicillium viridicatum is a species of fungus within the genus Penicillium (kingdom Fungi). It is widely recognized as a significant plant pathogen and a major cause of post-harvest rot, commonly referred to as green mold, which affects a broad range of agricultural commodities.
This pathogen primarily targets stored grains, including wheat, barley, and corn, but it is also frequently found on various vegetable crops and fruits. It thrives by colonizing damaged or high-moisture organic matter, breaking down plant tissues and significantly degrading the quality of the harvest during storage.
The life cycle of the fungus is characterized by the production of abundant conidia, which serve as the primary means of dispersal. These spores can persist in the environment for extended periods. Upon encountering favorable conditions, the spores germinate, and the mycelium begins to invade the substrate, securing nutrients for further fungal reproduction.
Development is heavily dependent on environmental factors, specifically high relative humidity and moderate temperatures. In storage facilities, poor ventilation is the main catalyst for an outbreak. When grain moisture content exceeds safe thresholds, the fungus can rapidly proliferate, leading to massive spoilage of entire batches of produce.
The danger posed by Penicillium viridicatum goes beyond visual spoilage. It is a known producer of hazardous mycotoxins, including ochratoxins and citrinin. These secondary metabolites represent a serious risk to food safety, as they can cause severe toxic reactions in humans and livestock if contaminated grain enters the food or feed supply chain.
