Description

Phomopsis phaseoli is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the kingdom Fungi, class Sordariomycetes, and order Diaporthales. It acts as a primary causative agent of stem blight and pod decay in various leguminous crops, most notably beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) and soybeans. The pathogen is widespread in regions with temperate climates where legumes are cultivated.

The disease manifests as necrotic lesions on stems, petioles, and pods. As the infection progresses, the fungal mycelium colonizes the vascular tissues, leading to water and nutrient transport inhibition. This results in premature wilting, lodging of the stems, and significant reduction in seed filling, often causing seeds to become discolored, shriveled, or rotten.

The life cycle involves the formation of pycnidia (asexual stage) and perithecia (sexual stage). The fungus primarily overwinters on crop residues left in the field and within infected seeds. Primary inoculum (ascospores or conidia) is dispersed by rain splashes or wind to healthy host tissues, triggering the cycle of infection early in the growing season.

Development is heavily dependent on environmental conditions. Frequent rainfall and moderate to high temperatures (20-30°C) create the perfect microclimate for spore germination and mycelial growth. If high humidity persists during the flowering and pod-filling stages, the potential for an outbreak increases dramatically, leading to severe yield losses.

Effective control strategies focus on integrated management. Key steps include the use of certified, disease-free seed, seed treatments with systemic fungicides, and crop rotation with non-host plants for at least three years. Additionally, sanitation—such as removing crop debris and deep plowing—is essential to reduce the primary inoculum load in the soil for the subsequent season.
